Buses in Kazakhstan: How to Travel Conveniently, Cheaply and Without Stress

The bus remains the most affordable mode of transport in Kazakhstan. In Almaty, Astana, Taldykorgan, Karaganda and dozens of other cities, cashless payment has already become the norm, and apps show exactly when the right route will arrive. The main thing is to know what to download and how to pay in your city, because the rules are different everywhere.

The bus is the most budget-friendly way to get around Kazakhstan. In large cities, cashless payment via Onay, Avtobys or Transcard works almost everywhere, and apps let you see the bus in real time. This article contains only working instructions: which apps to download, how much a ride costs in your city, how not to wait at the stop for nothing, and when it's better to choose a bus instead of a taxi.

The most reliable way is the 2GIS and Yandex Maps apps. They work throughout the country, show all routes, stops and often real-time arrival.

In Almaty, Taldykorgan, Karaganda and several other cities, the official ONAY! app works best — it shows buses and trolleybuses in real time, route diagrams and lets you build a route from door to door.

In Astana and many other cities (Shymkent, Aktau, Atyrau, etc.) the Avtobys app is convenient — it also provides tracking and easy payment.

Tip: before leaving home, open the app, enter point A and point B — you will see all options with transfers and travel time.

Payment rules depend on the city. Cash is not accepted everywhere, and cashless payment is often cheaper.

Almaty and Onay cities (Taldykorgan, Karaganda, Temirtau, etc.):

Unified Onay transport card or virtual card in the app.
Single ride — 120 tenge (app, QR code, SMS).
Monthly passes: Unified — 9,900 ₸, student — 4,200 ₸, school — 2,000 ₸, pensioner — 3,000 ₸ (plus minimum balance).
Additionally — payment via Kaspi QR and the new Avtobys system (in parallel with Onay).

Astana:

Transcard / CTS system.
Cashless travel is cheaper than cash.
Monthly passes "City" — 7,500 ₸, "City+suburbs" — 9,500 ₸ and other options.

Other cities:
In Shymkent and many regions Avtobys works — payment by bank card, Apple Pay/Google Pay, QR code. Check fares in your city's app.

Important: benefits (schoolchildren, students, pensioners) are issued through official cards or apps. Conditions differ by city — check on the akimat website or carrier's app.

ONAY! — the best choice in Almaty, Taldykorgan, Karaganda. Real-time tracking, routes, QR payment.
Avtobys — works in 20+ cities. Payment via NFC, Bluetooth, by vehicle number, bank card.
2GIS — universal navigator + public transport across all of Kazakhstan.
Yandex Maps — good alternative for route planning.
In Astana — CTS app.

Download 1–2 apps in advance — you will save a lot of time.

The bus is almost always cheaper than a taxi for daily trips. A taxi is only worth it if:

you are travelling with a group of 3–4 people;
late evening / early morning;
you have a lot of luggage or children.

The metro in Almaty is faster in the centre, but buses cover more districts.
Train or plane for long distances, but for 200–400 km a bus is often more convenient and cheaper (especially if you buy a ticket in advance).

City bus ≠ intercity bus.
Intercity services depart from bus stations (Sairan in Almaty, Saparzhai in Astana, etc.). Buy tickets online at:

Enter your full name and ID details — you receive an electronic ticket. The price is fixed and seats are guaranteed. Buying on the spot is often more expensive and without seat selection.

Suburban routes are usually paid like city routes or at a separate fare — check in the app.

Download 2GIS + your city app (Onay / Avtobys).
Find out your route and direction (always read the sign on the windshield carefully).
Buy a transport card or set up a virtual one in the app.
Top up the balance without commission (Kaspi, Halyk, app).
When boarding, tap the card / scan the QR / pay in the app.
For frequent trips, get a monthly pass — it is 2–3 times cheaper than single tickets.
Plan transfers (in some systems 60 minutes are free).
Avoid rush hour if possible.

For tourists: 2GIS + Onay/Avtobys. Take some cash just in case, but a card is better.
For students/schoolchildren: apply for a discounted card or tariff in the app.
For families with children: check the rules for strollers and luggage on the carrier's website.
For new residents: start with 2GIS and buying an Onay/Transcard.
Daily commute to work: a pass pays for itself already in the second week.

Boarding the wrong direction (always check the final destination).
Trying to pay cash where only cashless is accepted.
Not updating the app — outdated arrival times.
Forgetting about the minimum balance on the card when using a pass.
Buying an intercity ticket at the bus station on the day of travel without seats available.
