Budget Travel: How to Plan Trips from Kazakhstan and Save Without Risk

A budget trip is not necessarily a hostel, overnight flight and giving up normal food. In the good sense, it is a trip where you understand the full cost in advance: flights, accommodation, baggage, meals, transfers, insurance, communication, entertainment, exchange rates and possible commissions.

For Kazakhstan this is especially important. Most international trips are tied to departures from Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Aktau, Atyrau and other cities. Sometimes the price difference appears not because of a “secret site”, but because of the date, baggage, layover, departure airport, fare or refund conditions.

The main rule: compare not the advertised price of a ticket or tour, but the total cost of the trip.

A budget trip is a trip where you don’t overpay for things you don’t need and don’t save on things that could lead to big losses.

For example, a cheap flight ticket without baggage may be advantageous for a 3–4 day trip with a backpack. But for a family with children the same ticket can become more expensive than a regular fare after buying baggage, seat selection and meals. FlyArystan clearly states that baggage can be purchased separately, and airport baggage fees are higher than buying online in advance.

The situation with accommodation is similar. A non-refundable rate is often cheaper, but if plans can change, the saving turns into a risk. Booking.com in its documentation separates flexible, partially refundable and non-refundable conditions; with a non-refundable rate the traveller usually pays the full cost upon cancellation unless local rules state otherwise.

Start not with the question “where is cheaper?”, but with three decisions:

How much are you ready to spend in total?
Count not only the flight and hotel. Add transport to the airport, baggage, food, SIM/eSIM, taxis, excursions, card commissions, insurance, visas and a buffer for unforeseen expenses.

How flexible are your dates?
If your vacation is strictly Monday to Sunday, the choice is limited. If you can shift the trip by 2–3 days, cheaper flights and accommodation often appear.

What is more important: price, comfort or predictability?
One person can easily fly with a layover and hand luggage. For a family with children a direct flight or package tour is sometimes more advantageous because there are fewer organisational risks.

Self-guided trip — you buy flights, accommodation, insurance, transfers and entertainment separately. This is convenient if you want a flexible itinerary, non-standard accommodation or a trip not to a mass destination.

Package tour — usually includes flight, accommodation, transfer, insurance and sometimes meals. It should be compared not with “the price of a flight ticket”, but with the full cost of a self-guided trip.

Charter — a flight often used in tourist packages. It can be advantageous in price, but the conditions for changes, refunds and confirmation may differ from a regular flight. In services like Kaspi Travel, questions about charter flights, tours, visas, refunds and documents are even highlighted separately.

Low-cost — a model where the base price can be lower, but many services are paid separately: baggage, seat selection, meals, sometimes check-in or changes. FlyArystan positions itself as a low-cost carrier launched by Air Astana in 2019 for a more price-sensitive audience.

For searching flights use several types of sources.

1. Aggregators.
Aviasales.kz states that it does not sell tickets itself, but compares flight options and directs the user to airline and agency websites. This is convenient for initial comparison of routes, dates and layovers.

2. Marketplaces and travel services.
In Kazakhstan users often check Kaspi Travel, Aviata/Freedom Travel, Tickets.kz, Chocotravel and other services. Their advantage is a convenient interface, support, sometimes instalments, bonuses or notifications. The downside is that each service has its own rules for refunds, exchanges and service fees. For example, Tickets.kz states that a ticket is cancelled only after agreeing refund conditions with the passenger and airline, and after paying the service fee if provided.

3. Official airline websites.
Check Air Astana, FlyArystan, SCAT, Vietjet Qazaqstan and other carriers. Air Astana baggage rules depend on the purchased fare: in Economy it can be from 0 to 2 pieces up to 23 kg, and additional baggage can be bought with up to 30 % discount in advance if done more than 36 hours before departure.

SCAT in tariff results indicates free hand luggage 10 kg with dimensions 55×40×25 cm and, under certain fares, baggage up to 2 pieces of 23 kg each, but before purchase you need to check the specific fare and destination.

Vietjet Qazaqstan is a new brand based on QAZAQ AIR: the official website states that QAZAQ AIR operates under the Vietjet Qazaqstan trademark, and the brand was launched after a strategic partnership with Vietjet.

The simplest way to lower the price is not to search for “one date — one airport — one flight”.

Check:

flight a day earlier or later;
return not on Sunday but on Monday or Tuesday;
departure from Almaty instead of Shymkent or vice versa;
route via Astana, Aktau, Tashkent, Bishkek or another nearby hub if it is really convenient;
separate tickets there and back;
train + plane if a flight from another city is significantly cheaper.

But remember: separate tickets are a separate risk. If the first flight is delayed, the second carrier may not consider it their problem. FlyArystan, for example, uses a point-to-point model: on a connecting route the passenger must collect baggage and re-check it for the next flight.

Accommodation often becomes the second largest expense after the flight. Compare not only the price per night, but the total:

whether tax or fee is included;
whether free cancellation is available;
where the accommodation is located;
how much transport to the centre costs;
whether there is a kitchen;
whether late check-in is possible;
what recent reviews say;
whether there is a deposit;
whether the district is suitable for a family.

Sometimes a “cheaper” hotel turns out more expensive because of taxis. And apartments that are a bit more expensive can save money thanks to a kitchen, washing machine and proximity to the metro or bus.

On Booking.com and similar services always check cancellation conditions before paying. With a flexible option there may be free cancellation until a certain date; with partially refundable — a penalty; with non-refundable — loss of the full or almost full amount.

A tour can be more advantageous for mass destinations: Turkey, Egypt, UAE, Thailand, Vietnam and other beach destinations with charter programmes. Especially for a family, where transfer, meals, baggage, insurance and clear documents matter.

A self-guided trip is often more advantageous if you are going to a city for 3–5 days, want to stay in apartments, fly without baggage, are ready for a layover or are travelling across several cities.

Compare like this:

Tour price for all participants.
What is included: baggage, transfer, insurance, meals, room type.
Self-guided total cost: flights + accommodation + transfer + insurance + baggage + meals.
Cancellation and refund conditions.
Hotel rating and recent reviews.

If the tour is sold through a Kazakhstani travel agent, check the turkod. eGov states that Kazakhstan has a system for guaranteeing the rights of RK citizens in outbound tourism, administered by the “Touristіk Kamkor” fund, and the tour operator is required to issue tourists a turkod to check the tour product in the register.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports also reminds: when choosing an agency you need to clarify whether they issue a turkod, sign a contract and request documents — receipt, voucher, insurance policy and other confirmations.

The most common overpayments in travel:

Baggage.
Do not buy a ticket until you understand what the fare includes. On low-cost flights the base ticket may only include small hand luggage. Buying baggage in advance is often cheaper than at the airport.

Seat selection.
If you are flying alone and a window seat is not essential, you can skip paying. For a family with a child, on the contrary, it is better to understand in advance how the airline seats passengers.

Insurance.
Do not automatically buy the first offered insurance. Compare coverage, exclusions, validity period, destination country, active rest, deductible and claim procedure. For visa trips requirements may depend on the country and application date.

Refundable options.
Some services sell additional refund guarantees. For example, Tickets.kz offers a service to refund 90 % of the ticket cost, but it can only be purchased during booking, and additional services are not refundable.

All-inclusive meals.
All inclusive is not always advantageous. If you plan to walk around the city and eat outside the hotel, overpaying for meals may be unnecessary. But for a family beach holiday it sometimes saves money and nerves.

Visa rules cannot be checked using old Telegram posts. eGov maintains a visa regime page for citizens of Kazakhstan; at the time of preparation it was updated on 27 April 2026. The table separately indicates regimes by passport type, including the ordinary passport of an RK citizen.

Before the trip check:

whether a passport or just an ID card is needed;
passport validity period;
whether a visa or electronic authorisation is required;
rules for children;
airline document requirements;
exit restrictions due to debts;
rules for importing/exporting cash.

eGov recommends checking passport validity before departure; the passport must not expire less than 6 months after the end of the trip. It also states that a single import or export of cash exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars across the EAEU territory is subject to customs declaration.

Exchange rates also affect the budget. Before paying for accommodation or a tour in foreign currency check the bank rate and the official reference rate of the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan; the NBK publishes daily official market exchange rates.

Step 1. Fix the total budget

Divide the budget into categories:

flights;
accommodation;
baggage;
meals;
transport;
communication;
insurance;
entertainment;
visas and documents;
10–15 % reserve.

For a family count the total amount, not “per person”. Sometimes a child’s ticket is cheaper, but accommodation, baggage, transfers and meals still increase the total.

Step 2. Choose 3–5 destinations, not just one

Do not start with “I only want there”. Make a list: for example, Turkey, UAE, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan or domestic tourism in Kazakhstan. Then compare the full cost.

Step 3. Check flights in at least three places

Look at an aggregator, the official airline website and one or two travel services. Sometimes the aggregator shows the best option, but the airline website makes baggage and refund clearer. Sometimes a marketplace is more convenient because of support or payment.

Step 4. Compare accommodation by full cost

Do not choose only by price per night. Check cancellation, district, rating, recent reviews, transport, kitchen, late check-in and hidden fees.

Step 5. Compare a tour against a self-guided trip

For mass destinations be sure to compare a package tour and a self-guided assembly. A tour may already include charter, baggage, transfer, insurance and meals.

Step 6. Check documents and entry rules

Open eGov, the embassy website or the official visa resource of the destination country. Do not rely on old screenshots and chat advice.

Step 7. Before paying do a final check

Check first and last name in Latin, dates, airports, baggage, refund, accommodation cancellation, insurance, payment currency, card commission, layover time and documents.

Mistake 1. Looking only at the ticket price.
A cheap ticket without baggage, with an inconvenient layover and paid seat selection can lose to a more expensive fare.

Mistake 2. Buying a tour without a turkod.
For outbound tourism through a tour operator the turkod is an important element for checking tour protection.

Mistake 3. Not reading accommodation cancellation conditions.
A non-refundable rate is suitable only when you are sure of the dates.

Mistake 4. Not checking visas and passport.
Even a visa-free destination may have restrictions on stay duration, registration or passport validity.

Mistake 5. Paying for everything “just in case”.
Baggage, seats, insurance, meals, transfers and excursions are not always needed. Buy only what you will really use.

Mistake 6. Believing one advertisement.
“Last-minute tour”, “last seats” and “super price” need to be verified by comparison. Advertising shows the entry price, not always the final cost.

Saving on travel starts not with searching for a “secret promo code”, but with proper comparison. For Kazakhstan the best approach is: check several dates, several departure cities, different services, check airline websites, carefully read baggage and refund conditions, and for tours be sure to clarify the turkod and documents.

A good budget trip is not the cheapest trip. It is a trip where you know in advance what you are paying for, where you can refuse unnecessary things and where you do not risk the entire amount because of carelessness.
